1998 Lamborghini Diablo Roadster VT
The Diablo is the quintessence of the Italian mid-engined supercar. All the reviews complain about its heavy steering and clutch, but rave about its looks and performance. It has an absurdly cab-forward look, and when it was released in 1990, it was a fitting successor to the immortal Countach. It also boasted a top speed of 202 mph — one more mph than its rival, the Ferrari F40 — which, however, would kill it around a track because of its superior acceleration and cornering ability, both thanks to lower weight.
There were numerous Diablos during its 10+ year production run, ranging from the original rear-wheel-drive version of 1990, through the wild purple SE30, the outrageous GT and GTR racer, and the final 6.0 under Audi’s proprietorship. But this week I received what is perhaps the showiest and most outrageous of them all: the Roadster.
